Halima Aden is killing fashion weeks literally from New York to Milan one runway at a time and she couldn’t have arrived at a more perfect time. Fashion is Diversity and with the backlash and craziness coming from the new Administration , seeing Halima conquer stereotypes by shows that fashion has no boundaries and can bring everyone together. Creatives everywhere went crazy last week as we witnessed the first Hijab wearing model walk the runways of Michael Kors , Yeezy Season 5 and many more during New York Fashion Week . The Kenyan born model signed to IMG models in 2017 . Halima was born in a refugee camp and at the age of six aspired to become a Goodwill Ambassador for the United nations and help others like herself who are victims of horrible civil wars . Halima and her family moved to St. Cloud Minnesota which has a very large Somali- American community. Halima studies History at St Cloud University .
She made headlines in November last year when she was the first Miss Minnesota USA contestant to compete wearing a hijab during the pageant: for the event’s swimsuit round she wore a burkini. Aden reached the semi-finals of the competition, and the organisers said they were inundated with calls about her. Kanye West is known for how he casts his show and the diversity that is on his runway so it was a perfect match when he learned of Halima. This set a domino effect seeing as she walked Alberta Ferretti and Max Mara last week for Milan Fashion Week .
Halima is a trail blazer and the first IMG model to commit to wearing ” modest clothing ”
“A lot of people had a misconception that I would be the perfect poster child for Islam,” she says. “So I got a lot of Instagram comments like, ‘Oh, you don’t have your neck covered, you’re not a Muslim!’ My thing is, stop judging women, especially if you’re a man, because you don’t know the responsibility that comes with wearing a hijab.”
Paris Fashion Week its up next and we can’t wait to see all of the runways Halima will conquer in her future !
